A couple photos from a recent shoot with Merrill Lynch fund adviser Roger Carter in his downtown San Francisco offices for Barron’s. These types tend to be extremely busy and time in front of the lens very short. Preparation and the ability to know what you want to capture and do it fast are key.

Gunnar Sandberg, 16, was hit in the head by a line drive during a practice baseball game on March 11, 2010 fracturing his skull. Initially he was in critical condition and after being placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks he made a miraculous recovery and was released from the hospital seven weeks later. His injury renewed the debate over the safety of metal baseball bats – Gunnar was hit with a ball from a metal bat while pitching. I photographed him at his home in July.

Gunnar shows where the ball struck him.

I recently photographed UC Santa Cruz graduate student Chelsey Juarez in the Stable Isotope Lab on the campus of UC Santa Cruz for Mark Murrmann at Mother Jones Magazine, a new client. Chelsey has come up with a way of identifying the remains of immigrants who die crossing the US border from Mexico by their teeth. Here are a few outtakes.

Every once in a while I’m commissioned to photograph the same person at different times for different clients. Bay Area writer Michael Pollan is one such subject whom I met and photographed at his home two and a half years apart and most recently this month. It’s always interesting to solve the same problem twice; same subject, same location and same general request from the client. Much of Michael’s work centers around food and our relationship to it. It’s a fascinating subject and he does a terrific job shedding light on a complex issue. His books are a must-read for anyone who eats food. You can learn more about it here.

Firefighters from the Alameda County Fire Department, Station #12
Portraits from a recent visit to my local fire house. A great bunch of guys – and one great woman. I made sure they knew where my house was just in case.

Michael is an Oakland, CA artist who spends one day every month mending clothes, free of charge, on the streets of San Francisco’s Tenderloin. He is a gentle, patient soul with a big heart.
